week 3 reyna strategic planning
This week’s material emphasized the importance of strategic planning when migrating to the cloud. One of the most critical first steps is assessing whether a resource should even be migrated. Not all applications or databases are suitable for cloud environments—some may perform poorly or face legal and compliance issues. That's why it’s essential to gather detailed baseline information, understand existing systems, and account for business continuity and security needs before initiating migration.
The five key phases—assess, plan, migrate, validate, and manage—act as a roadmap for ensuring a smooth and efficient transition. These phases align closely with project management principles, highlighting the need for strong organizational oversight, risk mitigation, and communication throughout the process. Documentation from both the organization and the cloud service provider (CSP) plays a vital role in maintaining consistency and minimizing disruptions. By thoroughly preparing and following standard procedures, organizations can reduce downtime, ensure compliance, and fully capitalize on the benefits of cloud computing.
